The Rebels are a better team this year than they were last year, but so is Mississippi State. Regardless, this is Ole Miss’ game to lose. I think Ole Miss will prove they own Mississippi this year as they roll into Bowl season.
#16 Iowa vs. Nebraska (11/26):
Iowa will find a way to make this rivalry matchup interesting (like they always do) and close, but I still don’t think the “best 3-8 team in America” has what it takes to pull off the upset over Iowa. The Hawkeyes will win in a close, low-scoring matchup.
#10 Oklahoma vs. #7 Oklahoma State (11/27):
I have not believed that Oklahoma has been a top-tier team all year. While Oklahoma’s record enables the Sooners to stay in the top ten, Oklahoma State is a better team. Oklahoma State will break Oklahoma’s 6-game streak in the Bedlam Series by winning this matchup, and will improve their all-time record against Oklahoma to a terrible 19-90-7.
#2 Ohio State vs. #5 Michigan (11/27):
I will never pick against Michigan. Behind my 4-0 week last week, I am all good picking some games with my heart instead of my head this week and that’s what I’m doing this week. Michigan will beat Ohio State on Saturday for the first time since 2011.
NFL:
Rams vs. Packers (11/28):
Despite Aaron Rodgers’ toe injury, I believe the Packers will win this game.
Buccaneers vs. Colts (11/28):
The Colts are on a roll and I will pick them to stay hot with a win over the Buccaneers.
Titans vs. Patriots (11/28):
The Patriots will win this game as their defense continues to roll.
Browns vs. Ravens (11/28):
The Ravens are getting Lamar Jackson back and will win this game with him putting up big numbers.
NBA:
Bucks vs. Nuggets (11/26):
Now that the Bucks are healthy, they are back to their title-contending form, and I think Milwaukee will beat the Nuggets on Friday.
Suns vs. Nets (11/27):
In this matchup featuring the second- and third-best records in the NBA, I will pick the Nets to win at home.
Heat vs. Bulls (11/27):
Both of these teams are 12-7 on the year. Tie goes to the home team. I’ll take the Bulls.
Warriors vs. Clippers (11/28):
If I picked against the Warriors, even if I thought they could lose, it would be a bad decision. They’re 16-2 for a reason. I will pick Golden State.
NCAAB:
#19 Auburn vs. Loyola Chicago (11/25):
After their tough, double-overtime loss yesterday against UConn, I think Auburn will bounce back with a win over Loyola Chicago.
Maryland vs. Richmond (11/25):
Maryland had a bad early season loss to A10-member George Mason, but in this matchup, I think Maryland will beat their A10-foe Richmond.
#5 Duke vs. #1 Gonzaga (11/26):
While I sincerely think Duke will make this game closer than UCLA did, Gonzaga will still win this game.
#18 BYU vs. Utah (11/27):
This is a classic rivalry matchup in football, but in the basketball version of the rivalry, I’ll take BYU.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
November 19, 2021 - November 21, 2021
NCAAF:
#7 Michigan State vs. #4 Ohio State (11/20):
Ohio State is playing at a very high level offensively, and I don’t think Michigan State has any chance to slow them down. Ohio State will win this game.
#21 Arkansas vs. #2 Alabama (11/20):
Arkansas had a great start to the year, but have played many close games since then. Alabama will dominate the Razorbacks at home.
#10 Wake Forest vs. Clemson (11/20):
Wake Forest has been terrible defensively and great offensively all year. Clemson has been the opposite. However, I think Clemson will score just enough offensively to allow their defense to win them this game.
#3 Oregon vs. #23 Utah (11/20):
Oregon has been very one-dimensional on offense this year. They have a great defense, but Utah is much more balanced on offense, and that is why I am picking them to pull off the upset over a top-5 Oregon team.
NFL:
Colts vs. Bills (11/21):
The Colts are 4-1 in their last five games, but those games have mostly been against weak opponents. I will take the Bills to win this matchup.
Bengals vs. Raiders (11/21):
After their embarrassing loss to the Browns before their bye week, I think the Bengals will come out on fire, and will beat the Raiders.
Cowboys vs. Chiefs (11/21):
The Cowboys are 7-2, and while Kansas City hasn’t performed up to expectations so far this season, I will pick the Chiefs to win for the second week in a row.
Steelers vs. Chargers (11/21):
This matchup could change drastically if Ben Roethlisberger is able to play, as the Chargers will be without Joey Bosa and Jerry Tillery, but I still think Justin Herbert and the Chargers will win.
NBA:
Lakers vs. Celtics (11/19):
If Lebron is able to play, I would most likely pick the Lakers, but since his injury status is up in the air, I will pick the Celtics to win this installment of a classic rivalry.
Bulls vs. Nuggets (11/19):
The Bulls have played well all season, but that won’t stop me from picking Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets to win this game.
Mavericks vs. Suns (11/19):
The Mavericks lost to the Suns on Wednesday night, and I think without Luka Doncic playing for Dallas, the Suns will win again.
Heat vs. Wizards (11/20):
The Heat got Jimmy Butler back from injury recently, and because of that, I think the Heat will win this game.
NCAAB:
Wichita State vs. Arizona (11/19):
A few years ago, this matchup could have been one with both teams in the top 25, but I still think it is an interesting game at a neutral site and Arizona will win.
#5 Villanova vs. #17 Tennessee (11/20):
Tennessee is a good team and they will get better before the end of the year, but since it’s early, I will pick the more experienced Villanova team to win.
#18 North Carolina vs. #6 Purdue (11/20):
Both of these teams have very exciting young talent, but Purdue has Trevion Williams, a great veteran, and I think he will be the X-factor in a Purdue win.
Richmond vs. Drake (11/20):
This matchup is definitely going to go under the radar, but these two teams were both teams on the NCAA Tournament bubble last year, and I think Drake will continue their success with a win over Richmond.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
November 12, 2021 - November 14, 2021
NCAAF:
#8 Oklahoma vs. #13 Baylor (11/13):
I think the eighth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners will be ready for this game with plenty of motivation, feeling that the Playoff Committee has underrated them. Even though Baylor lost last week and is looking for a bounce back win at home, Oklahoma is playing after a bye week and will win behind extra preparation during the bye week.
Minnesota vs. #20 Iowa (11/13):
This rivalry matchup between Minnesota and Iowa will be extremely important in deciding the Big Ten West, as both of these teams are part of the four-team tie in that division. The all-time series is currently tied 42-42-2, but Iowa has won six games in a row in this rivalry, and I think Iowa will continue that streak on Saturday.
#11 Texas A&M vs. #15 Ole Miss (11/13):
Picking this game is picking whether I think elite offense is more important than elite defense. Unfortunately for Ole Miss, defense travels on the road, and defense wins championships, and as such, I think Texas A&M, with their defense that ranks 2nd in the nation in points allowed, will win this game.
#16 NC State vs. #12 Wake Forest (11/13):
I think that NC State’s resumé has lost a lot of its luster as the season has gone on. Their big overtime win against Clemson now doesn’t look so impressive, as Clemson are just 6-3 on the season, and clearly aren’t a top ten team like they were when NC State played them. Coming off a tough loss last week, I think Wake Forest will win this game.
NFL:
Saints vs. Titans (11/14):
This team is the battle of two very injured teams. The Saints lost starting QB Jameis Winston for the season with a torn ACL and MCL. The Titans will be playing without MVP-candidate Derrick Henry for an extended amount of time. In this matchup, I will stick with Ryan Tannehill and the Titans.
Browns vs. Patriots (11/14):
The Browns destroyed the Bengals in their first game without Odell Beckham Jr. The Patriots have won three games in a row, albeit against winning teams, and have looked more like their Tom Brady era selves on offense and defense behind a dominant rushing game and great defense. The Patriots will win this game.
Chiefs vs. Raiders (11/14):
The Raiders lost to the Giants last weekend, while the Chiefs failed to dominate the Packers who were playing without Aaron Rodgers. Both of these AFC West teams are hard to get a read on, but I will go ahead and pick Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to have an offensive explosion this weekend to beat Las Vegas.
Vikings vs. Chargers (11/14):
The Vikings have managed to keep every game this year interesting all the way through the end of the 4th quarter, and last week they took the Ravens to overtime. But the Vikings have yet to win many of those games so far and I think this game will be no different, but the Chargers will win this close game.
NBA:
Bulls vs. Warriors (11/12):
The Warriors are 10-1 so far this year, even without Klay Thompson. The Bulls are off to a hot 8-3 start with their completely revamped roster. But with Nikola Vucevic out, I think the Warriors will be able to beat the red-hot Bulls.
Bucks vs. Celtics (11/12):
Giannis Antetokounmpo was one of the only healthy players from the Bucks’ Championship-winning starting five for the first week and a half of the season. Now that Jrue Holiday is back, Milwaukee has started to play much better, including in their win at Madison Square Garden against the Knicks, and the Bucks will win this primetime matchup with the Celtics.
Heat vs. Jazz (11/13):
Last week I picked the Heat to win this exact same matchup at home. This week I will pick the home team again, but this time that means I will be picking the Jazz to beat the Heat in a matchup of two very good teams.
Trail Blazers vs. Nuggets (11/14):
This matchup produced a very great playoff series a few years ago, and I think this game will be another good one. After serving his one-game suspension, I think Nikola Jokic will quiet any criticism he faced by playing a great game against Portland, and he will help lead the Nuggets to a victory.
NCAAB:
#4 Villanova vs. #2 UCLA (11/12):
After a trip to the Final Four for UCLA, and with Villanova’s championship pedigree, this matchup has stood out on the College Basketball calendar as an early game-of-the-year candidate. After keeping every player from their Final Four roster and adding transfer Miles Johnson from Rutgers, and superstar Freshman Peyton Watson, UCLA will win this matchup.
San Diego State vs. BYU (11/12):
Although this is an off-radar type of game, I have both of these teams in my preseason NCAA Tournament bracket, and they both are in the others receiving votes category of the preseason AP Poll. But, early in the season, I will lean towards BYU in this game mainly because of home court advantage.
#5 Texas vs. #1 Gonzaga (11/13):
This matchup is another early game-of-the-year candidate with a team coming off a Final Four appearance. Texas’ biggest addition was a new head coach, former Texas Tech boss, Chris Beard, while Gonzaga added the #1 overall recruit in this year’s recruiting class, Chet Holmgren. I think Holmgren and Gonzaga will find a way to win this game at home.
#20 Florida State vs. Florida (11/14):
This pick will break the mold of the rest of my picks. I will actually be picking a road team! In past years, I would pick Florida to win this game, but Florida State has much more talent, both returning and new, so I will be picking the Seminoles to win this in-state rivalry game.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
November 5, 2021 - November 7, 2021
NCAAF:
#3 Michigan State vs. Purdue (11/6):
After beating #6 Michigan at home, this game has the setup of a typical trap game against a sneaky Purdue team for Michigan State, but I still think Michigan State will find a way to win on the road.
#13 Auburn vs. #14 Texas A&M (11/6):
After two straight losses to Arkansas and Mississippi State, Texas A&M has won three in a row, including an upset over top-ranked Alabama. Texas A&M will play great defense to win this game.
#9 Wake Forest vs. North Carolina (11/6):
This is the most talented team Wake Forest will play for the rest of the year. A convincing win may coerce the CFP to move the Demon Deacons up in the rankings, and I think Wake Forest will get this much-needed win, but it will be close.
Tennessee vs. #18 Kentucky (11/6):
This matchup normally stacks up as a late-season top 15 matchup in basketball, but this time around in football, a pesky Tennessee team with a potent offense takes on a scrappy Kentucky team coming off a loss. Kentucky will avenge their loss last week by beating Tennessee at home.
NFL:
Titans vs. Rams (11/7):
It will be very interesting to see how the offensive scheme for the Titans changes in this game with no Derrick Henry. Because the Titans are missing Henry, recently acquired Von Miller and the rest of the Rams will win this game.
Packers vs. Chiefs (11/7):
Even without Aaron Rodgers playing, I still believe Jordan Love and the Packers can keep this game close. But going on the road to Kansas City and winning in your first career start against Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City is a tall task. The Chiefs will win this game.
Patriots vs. Panthers (11/7):
While all four wins for Bill Belichick and the Patriots this season are against first-year head coaches and the Panthers don’t fit into that category, I think the Patriots will win on the road against Carolina.
Browns vs. Bengals (11/7):
The Browns have been struggling ever since Baker Mayfield’s injury. Cincinnati is coming off a rough loss against the Jets, but the Bengals will rebound with a win this week against the Browns.
NBA:
Knicks vs. Bucks (11/5):
The Bucks have been destroyed by injuries so far this year, while the Knicks have been raining down threes to get to a 5-3 start this year. After an off-night shooting, I think the Knicks will be able to pull off this win on the road.
Jazz vs. Heat (11/6):
The Jazz are off to a 6-1 start to the year, but the Heat have the same record with their new look roster. I think the Heat will stay unbeaten at home by winning this tough matchup against the Jazz.
76ers vs. Bulls (11/6):
The Bulls and 76ers are off to hot starts, with identical 6-2 records to start the season. While the 76ers won the first matchup between these two yesterday at home, I think the Bulls will take this matchup at home.
Nets vs. Raptors (11/7):
James Harden is off to a rough start to the season so far, but the Nets are still 5-3. Surprisingly, the Raptors are off to a 6-3 start of their own. However, I think KD, Harden and the Nets will be too much for the Raptors to handle.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
October 28, 2021 - October 31, 2021
NCAAF:
#6 Michigan vs. #8 Michigan State (10/30):
This is the first matchup with both of these two teams in the AP Top 10 since 1964. Both teams are much improved on both sides of the ball in comparison to their off-years last year (when Michigan State beat Michigan at the Big House), but Michigan has won the last two editions of this rivalry on the road in East Lansing. I think Michigan will continue that streak this weekend, with the Michigan run defense being the X-factor in this game.
#9 Iowa vs. Wisconsin (10/30):
Iowa cruised to a 6-0 record, holding the #2 spot in the AP rankings, prior to their embarrassing loss to unranked Purdue at home. Wisconsin, after starting 1-3, has won three games in a row, including two wins in road games over Illinois, and #23 Purdue. Even after a bye week, I still think Iowa is trending in the wrong direction, and Wisconsin’s personnel match up very well against Iowa’s personnel. Wisconsin will limit their turnovers, and pull off this upset.
#10 Ole Miss vs. #18 Auburn (10/30):
Both Ole Miss and Auburn have high-powered offenses. Ole Miss’ perceived strength is in the passing game with Heisman candidate Matt Corral at the helm, while Auburn’s perceived strength is running the ball with Tank Bigsby, who is averaging more than five yards per carry this season. In reality, both of these teams have balanced offenses, but I believe Ole Miss’ offense will play better, leading to a victory on the road over #18 Auburn.
#20 Penn State vs. #5 Ohio State (10/30):
Before the season, this would have been the best matchup of the weekend. But while Ohio State’s offense has operated at one of the highest levels in all of college football since their week two loss to #12 Oregon at home, Penn State has struggled. After losses in two straight weeks where their offense put up just 20 points and 10 points in regulation, they will encounter the best team they have played so far. Ohio State will beat the struggling Nittany Lions.
NFL:
Packers vs. Cardinals (10/28):
The Cardinals are the NFL’s only remaining undefeated team, at 7-0. After a 35-point loss to the Saints in week one, the Packers have won six straight games, heading into this matchup with a 6-1 record. However, the Packers will most likely play this game without top receivers Allen Lazard and Davante Adams, giving the Cardinals the edge in this primetime matchup on Thursday Night Football.
Titans vs. Colts (10/31):
The Colts boast a great defense, but the Titans have a one-man wrecking crew in Derrick Henry, who added to his MVP case last Sunday with a passing touchdown against the Chiefs. While I believe the Colts have been playing better lately, I believe Carson Wentz will make a costly turnover in this game, allowing the Titans to continue their three-game winning streak, which started after an embarrassing overtime loss to the Jets.
Patriots vs. Chargers (10/31):
The Chargers had a brutal loss the last time they were on the field, losing 34-6 on the road against the Ravens. The Patriots were on the opposite end of that, destroying the Jets 54-13 last Sunday. However, I believe the Chargers will bounce back from that rough loss to beat the Patriots at home.
Buccaneers vs. Saints (10/31):
The Saints are 4-2 despite very inconsistent offensive outputs, in large part because of their amazing defense. The Buccaneers are 6-1 on the year, with only a loss to the Rams at SoFi Stadium in week three. The Buccaneers may have a weakness with their iffy secondary, but I don’t believe in the Saints’ ability to exploit that weakness. The Buccaneers will win this important divisional matchup.

PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
May 14, 2021 - May 16, 2021
NBA:
Heat vs. Bucks:
The Heat and Bucks will have one more rematch of last year’s playoff series, and this matchup comes at a perfect time. If there is a three-way tie between the Hawks, Heat, and Knicks, the Heat will be in a 3 seed vs. 6 seed playoff rematch against the Bucks. This game could go a long way towards deciding that seeding and if that scenario unfolds at all. I think the Heat truly have the Bucks’ number, and they will beat them once again when it matters most.
Celtics vs. Knicks:
The Celtics were trending in the right direction for a while and it looked like they might avoid the play-in bracket, but then it all went south. Now with Jaylen Brown out for the season with a wrist injury, it really feels like this season is on a non-stop track towards disappointment. I think that with the surging Knicks playing with playoff seeding on the line, they will play tough, and the Celtics won’t be able to match it. I'll take the Knicks in this game.
Warriors vs. Grizzlies:
This game could go a long way in deciding the outcome of the play-in bracket in the Western Conference. These teams currently have the same record with two games remaining. The winner of this game will be almost guaranteed to have a one-game matchup against the Lakers with the seventh seed in the Western Conference on the line. I love what the Grizzlies’ roster has to offer, but Steph Curry and the Warriors have too much of an advantage in playoff experience to lose this game.
Nuggets vs. Trail Blazers:
The Nuggets will still be playing for playoff seeding in this game. The Trail Blazers will be playing to guarantee their spot in the playoffs, and to possibly improve their seeding. It is actually possible that this matchup is nothing more than a precursor to a first round playoff between these two teams. With such heavy implications for both teams, I think the Nuggets will have enough motivation to push past the Trail Blazers.
MLB:
Phillies vs. Blue Jays (5/14 - 5/16):
I am picking the Phillies to win this series because of their starting pitching. The Blue Jays are undecided for a start in this series, but Philadelphia has Aaron Nola on the mound during this series. Both teams are good offensively, and pretty evenly matched in general, but I think the Phillies will win this series by winning Nola’s start and then winning one of the two other games.
Braves vs. Brewers (5/14 - 5/16):
Even without having to face Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burns at any point in this series, the Braves have looked shaky enough throughout the season that I do not feel confident picking them in a series against a very good team. I think the Brewers will bounce back from their series loss against the Cardinals to win this weekend series against Atlanta.
Mets vs. Rays (5/14 - 5/16):
The Mets have been playing some great baseball recently, and as a result of that great play, they have won seven games in a row. Their run differential is not great for a team five games above .500 (it’s currently only +4), indicating that this success and dominance might not last for too long, but I think it will continue throughout the weekend, and the Mets will win this series.
Cardinals vs. Padres (5/14 - 5/16)
The Cardinals head to San Diego after taking two out of three from Milwaukee and hope to do the same against the Padres. The Padres are limping back from Denver to San Diego, after Fernando Tatis, Jr. and Wil Myers tested positive for COVID-19. They won’t play in this series, and nor will Jurickson Profar, Jorge Mateo, or Eric Hosmer, who are out due to contract tracing. Because the Padres’ roster is so depleted, I am picking the Cardinals to win this series.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
May 7, 2021 - May 9, 2021
NBA:
Nuggets vs. Jazz:
The Nuggets are 8-2 in their last ten games, but the Jazz have won three games in a row. Denver is playing the second game of a back-to-back, and I think that gives an advantage to the Jazz, who I am predicting will win this game.
Knicks vs. Suns:
Two of the most surprising teams in the league so far this year will match up with each other tomorrow. I think the Suns still have a lot to play for, and they will play hard enough to beat the Knicks.
Lakers vs. Trail Blazers:
It seems like Anthony Davis injured himself in today’s game against the Clippers, and Lebron James will be out for this game. The Lakers have a lot to play for, but I think the Trail Blazers have the same sense of urgency, and a healthier roster, allowing them to take this win.
Heat vs. Celtics:
These teams play two games in a row against each other on Sunday and Tuesday. They are currently tied for the all-important 6th seed in the East. I predicted the Celtics to take the 6th seed in a prior episode of the 4th and 24 Podcast, and as a result, I will stick with that idea and pick the Celtics to win this game against the Heat.
MLB:
Dodgers vs. Angels (5/7 - 5/9):
I think the Dodgers will be able to get back on track with the help of strong pitching, and they will take this series.
White Sox vs. Royals (5/7 - 5/9):
The winner of this series will come out with the lead over the AL Central division. I will stick with my preseason pick to win the AL Central, the White Sox to win this series.
Rays vs. A’s (5/7 - 5/9):
I think the Rays, similar to the Dodgers, will win this series off the backs of their advantage in pitching.
Padres vs. Giants (5/7 - 5/9)
Last week I picked the Giants to win a series against the Padres in San Diego. This time I think the home team wins again, but that means I’m sticking with my pick: The Giants.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
April 30, 2021 - May 2, 2021
NBA:
Hawks vs. 76ers:
If Trae Young was healthy, my prediction for this game could have changed. However, with Trae Young, Kevin Huerter, Bogdan Bogdanovic, De’Andre Hunter, and Clint Capela all listed as either out or day-to-day, the Hawks are severely undermanned. Meanwhile, it looks like the 76ers will have their full complement of players, and I believe that as long as both Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid play in this game, The 76ers will win.
Trail Blazers vs. Nets:
This game is a very odd game. If Kyrie Irving was 100% healthy, I would pick the Nets with confidence. The Trail Blazers are definitely talented enough to beat a banged-up Nets team. However, I still believe that even if Kevin Durant is the only All-Star on the floor for Brooklyn, the Nets will win this game.
Jazz vs. Suns:
This game is, at least in my opinion, the last chance for Phoenix to try and get to the #1 seed in the West. The Jazz have not had Donovan Mitchell or Mike Conley available in a number of recent games. However, if the injury report stays as it is now, the Jazz will not have Conley, but they will have Mitchell for this game. If Mitchell plays, I believe the Jazz have just enough firepower to beat the Suns.
Nuggets vs. Clippers:
The Clippers have been playing extremely well recently, even with Kawhi Leonard out since April 19. Leonard will not play in this game. On the other side, the Nuggets lost Jamal Murray to a season-ending injury, but they are 8-1 since his injury. Both teams are definitely playing at a higher level than what is expected of them considering their injury issues, however I think the Clippers will be able to bounce back from a loss to the Suns and they will beat the Nuggets.
MLB:
Giants vs. Padres (4/30 - 5/2):
The Giants have been consistent throughout the season so far, whereas the Padres have had some rough looks including getting swept by the Brewers in a three-game series. I think that both the Giants and Padres have one favorable pitching matchup each in the series, and whoever will overcome an unfavorable matchup or win the one toss-up matchup will win the series. Despite the Padres’ star power in their lineup, I think the Giants will be able to pull out a series victory over the Padres.
Mets vs. Phillies (4/30 - 5/2):
Similar to the Padres-Giants series, the starting pitching matchup strongly favors one team over the other in two games of the series, however, for the Mets, it seems like it doesn't matter who the pitcher is. Just ask Jacob deGrom how many wins his team has this year in his five starts, despite deGrom owning a 0.51 ERA on the year so far (hint: they’re 2-3 in his starts). Because of the Mets’ offensive struggles, I have to go with the Phillies in this series.
Indians vs. White Sox (4/30 - 5/2):
The starting pitching matchups in the series are relatively even, so this year's will most likely come down to offensive production. I believe that the White Sox have the more talented roster on paper, and since I picked them to win the division at the beginning of the year, I will stay loyal to my prediction. I am picking the White Sox to win this series.
Angels vs. Mariners (4/30 - 5/2)
The Angels had a hot start to the season, but faded soon after that start (although they seem to have reclaimed their form recently). The Mariners, on the other hand, had an extremely unexpected and solid start to the season. The Mariners might not be able to continue the pace they are on right now, however I think the Angels can. Because of the Angels’ more trustworthy roster, I am picking them to win the series.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
April 23, 2021 - April 25, 2021
NBA:
Heat vs. Hawks:
I am picking the Heat to win this game because I think their roster on paper is stronger than the Hawks’ roster, and that Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler will be able to pull the Heat over the finish line.
Celtics vs. Nets:
The Nets recently lost to the Raptors, and that is not a good look right before you go to play a team that has been on fire recently. That team has been the Celtics. I think that because the Nets won’t have Kevin Durant or James Harden in this game, the Celtics will win.
76ers vs. Bucks (4/24):
The 76ers and Bucks played tonight, and the Bucks beat the 76ers 124-117. I think these two teams are too evenly matched for one to sweep the other in a two-game mini-series. For that reason, I am picking the 76ers to beat the Bucks.
Lakers vs. Mavericks (4/24):
Anthony Davis had a slow night against the Mavericks tonight after returning from injury, although he played just 16 minutes in the game. I think AD will play more minutes in the rematch against the Mavericks, and the Lakers will win because of it.
MLB:
Brewers vs. Cubs (4/23 - 4/25):
The Cubs starting pitching has been less than ideal to start the season, and their hitting has been even worse. Meanwhile, the Brewers are coming off a three-game sweep of the Padres. I think that behind some strong pitching performances, the Brewers will be able to beat the Cubs in this series.
Blue Jays vs. Rays (4/23 - 4/25):
Neither of these teams have started out the way they wanted to, with the Blue Jays starting under .500 and the Rays only one game above .500. This could be a huge momentum shifting series for either team, and I think the Blue Jays will be able to win and shift momentum in their favor.
Nationals vs. Mets (4/23 - 4/25):
The Nationals are still just two years removed from a World Series Title, but this team just doesn’t feel quite the same. Meanwhile, under new ownership, the Mets made many moves in the offseason to become a playoff contender, and I think they will be. I also think the Mets will win this series against the Nationals at home.
Reds vs. Cardinals (4/23 - 4/25):
The Reds’ offense has surprisingly continued their hot start to the season, while the Cardinals have been a bit shaky. Both teams are primed to contend for the division lead throughout the season, and while I think the Cardinals will win the marathon, the Reds will win the sprint (a.k.a this weekend series).
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
April 16, 2021 - April 18, 2021
NBA:
Clippers vs. 76ers:
The 76ers might have talked a lot before their matchup with the Nets yesterday, but they backed it up with their play. Overall, the 76ers are having a great season, and now find themselves in sole possession of the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. But the Clippers are also having a great season. Paul George has been on an absolute tear in the last few games, and so have the Los Angeles Clippers as a team. However, with Kawhi Leonard out, I believe the size of the 76ers will have the room to dominate this game, and the 76ers will win.
Knicks vs. Mavericks:
It seems like the Knicks are always playing intriguing games on Fridays. Regardless of the fact that it seems like they’re always on every Friday, and I have predicted their games now three weeks in a row, the Knicks are having a pleasantly surprising season. I don’t think Knicks fans will settle for just a playoff appearance, but this season has been a step in the right direction. On the other hand, the Mavericks have underperformed for most of the season. I still think the Mavericks are good enough to win a series in the playoffs, and I think they are definitely good enough to beat the Knicks.
Jazz vs. Lakers:
Okay, let’s try this one again. The Lakers are too undermanned to win a game against one of the best teams in the league. Last weekend, they were able to destroy the Nets, even without Lebron James, Anthony Davis, Kyle Kuzma, and Wesley Matthews playing. But the difference maker in that game was Andre Drummond. And while he is a great center, and can definitely get his buckets, the Nets’ only weakness is interior defense. The Utah Jazz are the opposite. They have a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert, playing center. I think Gobert will be able to keep Drummond in check, and without Lebron or AD, the Jazz will beat the Lakers.
Warriors vs. Celtics:
Both the Warriors and Celtics were under .500 on the season, but both have changed their outlooks recently. The Warriors have won three games in a row to get to 27-28, while the Celtics have won four games in a row to get to 29-26. The Celtics are now the fifth seed in the East, and I think they will widen the gap between themselves and sixth throughout the rest of the year, and they might even get to the fourth seed. In this game, even though Steph Curry is on fire right now, I still have to go with the Celtics, especially after their wins over the Nuggets and Trail Blazers.
MLB:
Dodgers vs. Padres (4/16 - 4/18):
This particular three-game series between these two teams will not be as exciting as some of the ones will be later this season for a variety of reasons. Although Fernando Tatis, Jr. is expected to play in this series, the statuses of Wil Myers and Dinelson Lamet are unknown. On the Dodgers’ side, Brusdar Graterol has not pitched yet this season, and his status is unknown, and the same goes for Joe Kelly. Cody Bellinger is also still unavailable, so it’s safe to say both teams will be banged up in this series. And yet, these rosters are still good enough to compete for a championship. I expect the Dodgers to win this series behind strong outings from the three starting pitchers in this series: Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, and Trevor Bauer.
Braves vs. Cubs (4/16 - 4/18):
The Cubs have had some awful offensive performances to start the season, and as a result, their batting average as a team is currently .163. Not good. The Braves have not had the best start offensively, either, sitting at 25th in the league in batting average (.219), but to compensate for their poor average, their slugging percentage is 5th in the league, and they are also tied for the league lead in home runs. Overall, the Braves have the better roster on paper, and their walk-off win today against the Marlins might give them some momentum going into this series. As a result, I think the Braves will end up winning this series, and going out on a limb, I think they might sweep the Cubs.
Cardinals vs. Phillies (4/16 - 4/18):
The Phillies had a hot start to the season, at one point owning the best record in baseball, but have since gone ice cold. After their 5-1 start to the season, they have gone 1-5, and the only win they got was solely because MLB’s replay system failed, giving the Phillies the game-winning run against the Braves last weekend. Even with that result, the Phillies are trending completely in the wrong direction. The Cardinals have taken a more steady route to their 6-6 record, but the differences from one game to the next are massive. I believe that having Aaron Nola on the mound in game three of this series will propel the Phillies to a series win over the Cardinals.
Indians vs. Reds (4/16 - 4/18):
The Reds started the season on fire, but have recently cooled off a little bit, especially in terms of producing runs. In their first seven games, they scored 9.0 runs per game, and went 6-1, but in their last five games, they scored 2.4 runs per game, and went 1-4. The Indians have had more of a steady start, although their run production has been shaky at best. Because of the inconsistency of the batting on either team, I think this series will come down to whose starting pitchers can force the other team’s hitters to go cold. In a small sample size, Indians starter for game one, Logan Allen, has been good to start the season, and the Indians will also have last year’s AL Cy Young Award winner, Shane Bieber, on the mound in game three. I believe the Indians’ hitters will give those two starters just enough run support for the Indians to take this series.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
April 8, 2021 - April 11, 2021
NBA:
Grizzlies vs. Knicks:
The Grizzlies are 7-3 in their last ten games as they try to tighten their grip on the eighth seed in the Western Conference. But what’s more remarkable about their last ten games is that their three losses are only to one team: the Utah Jazz (who own the best record in the NBA). The Grizzlies have been impressive lately, so what about the Knicks? Well...they are 4-6 in their last ten games. Knowing how well Memphis has been playing recently and the overall strength of their roster, I will pick the Grizzlies to win this matchup.
Lakers vs. Nets:
The Nets have been dealing with injury issues all year long. However, Kevin Durant returned last night from an injury and scored 17 points in 18 minutes off the bench on 5/5 shooting from the field, and 5/5 from the free throw line too. He was absolutely lethal. And although this roster is still not at full strength (James Harden is now injured), Kyrie Irving, Lamarcus Aldridge, and Blake Griffin are all healthy. On the other hand, for the Lakers, they might have Andre Drummond for this game, but Lebron James and Anthony Davis are still out. The Nets are too good to lose to a shorthanded Lakers team.
Celtics vs. Nuggets:
The Celtics have underachieved all season long, and have arguably been the most disappointing team of the year. The Nuggets, on the other hand, have been just as good as advertised, now sitting at fourth place in the West with a 33-18 record. Since the trade deadline, in fact, the Nuggets are 7-0 and seem to have a new fire lit under them after acquiring Aaron Gordon. While these teams still have relatively similar potential in the long term, I think the Nuggets have been playing too well for this win streak to end with a loss to the Celtics.
Heat vs. Trail Blazers:
The Heat and Trail Blazers are both sitting in sixth place in their respective conferences. The Heat had a rough start to the season, but have been better since becoming fully healthy. Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers fought through injuries to CJ Mccollum and Jusuf Nurkic while staying competitive in the West. I think these teams are very evenly matched, so who plays in the game will most likely be the deciding factor. The Blazers have Norman Powell and Jusuf Nurkic listed as day-to-day with injuries, and the Heat have Tyler Herro also listed as day-to-day. I think the deciding factor will be the Trail Blazers playing on the second night of a back-to-back, and the Heat will win because they will be more well-rested.
MLB:
Nationals vs. Dodgers (4/9):
This game is the Dodgers’ home opener, and the first game in Dodger Stadium with fans since 2019. The Dodgers will have a ring ceremony and will raise championship banners before this game. I think that will give them extra motivation to win Opening Day at home, and with Walker Buehler on the mound, the Dodgers will take this game.
Yankees vs. Rays (4/9):
The pitching matchup is a key matchup in this game (as always in baseball). Rays starter, Rich Hill (9.00 ERA this season), will have to duel with Yankees starter, Corey Kluber (2.25 ERA this season), if the Rays want to have a chance. I think the Yankees will be able to turn over their lineup easily in this game, and will score enough runs to put the game away early.
Phillies vs. Braves (4/9):
The Atlanta Braves have had a sluggish start to the season, while the Philadelphia Phillies have been surprisingly strong out of the gates. I think in the long run, the Braves will pull it together and will eventually win the NL East division. But, in this game, with Zach Wheeler on the mound for the Phillies, and a lineup that is on a roll so far, the Phillies will win.
Brewers vs. Cardinals (4/8)
In this game, similar to the Yankees-Rays matchup, pitching will be a key factor. It is very early in the year, but Adam Wainwright’s 20.25 ERA after a game does not look pretty for the Cardinals, while Corbin Burnes’ 1.42 ERA for the Brewers looks like a great sign for the rest of the season. I think with Burnes starting, the Brewers win this matchup.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
April 2, 2021 - April 4, 2021
College Basketball:
Final Four and National Championship Game predictions will be made on the episode 30 of the 4th and 24 Podcast.
NBA:
Mavericks vs. Knicks:
The Dallas Mavericks were quieter than people expected they would be at the trade deadline. Recently they have claimed some good wins, but they currently sit in 7th place in the Western Conference standings, 3.5 games back of the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers, who are currently tied for 5th place in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks, despite an even 24-24 record on the season, are still tied with the Miami Heat for 5th place in the Eastern Conference. The Mavericks have the better roster on paper, and since they need this win more, I think they will win the game.
Bucks vs. Trail Blazers:
The Bucks made a few acquisitions at the NBA trade deadline, and also utilized the buyout market to improve their roster, however a few of those acquisitions, such as Jeff Teague, P.J. Tucker, and Rodions Kurucs are game time decisions or out for this game. Meanwhile, the Portland Trail Blazers are currently on a four-game winning streak, including three straight wins since the acquisition of Norman Powell at the trade deadline. I believe that with the strong performance so far from their three guard lineup, the Blazers will win this game.
Lakers vs. Clippers:
The Lakers will be playing short-handed once again, although they do now have Andre Drummond in the lineup. The Clippers have not been astonishing recently with a 7-3 record in their last ten games (including a blown 4th quarter lead to the rebuilding Orlando Magic), but they should have a more healthy roster than the Lakers do heading into this matchup. This game will mean almost nothing in terms of overall confidence for either of these teams, but I think the Clippers win because the core of their roster is more healthy than the Lakers’ core.
Grizzlies vs. 76ers:
The Memphis Grizzlies are currently sitting at 9th place in the Western Conference, and they are tied with the Warriors. With the new playoff format, they would have a tough road to make it without reaching in the eighth seed, although they would still have a chance, unlike in previous years, if they remained in the same place at the end of the season. On the other hand, the 76ers finally lost possession of the number one seed in the East, but reinforcements are on their way, as Joel Embiid is supposed to come back for Saturday’s matchup with the Timberwolves. Assuming Embiid plays against the Grizzlies too, I think the 76ers will walk away with a victory.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
March 26, 2021 - March 28, 2021
College Basketball:
Sweet Sixteen Predictions for all eight games will be made on the episode 28 of the 4th and 24 Podcast.
NBA:
Pacers vs. Mavericks:
The Mavericks are 7-3 in their last 10 games, and overall they have been playing a lot better since the All-Star break. It will be very interesting to see how they integrate JJ Redick into the rotation after acquiring him at the trade deadline. The Pacers, meanwhile, have finally gotten Caris LeVert on the court, and he has not disappointed. LeVert is averaging nearly 17 points, to go with 4 assists and 4 rebounds per game through his first seven games with the Pacers. But the Pacers as a whole are still not playing too well, so I think the Mavericks will win this game.
Grizzlies vs. Jazz (March 26):
This prediction requires no explanation. This will be the weekend when the curse gets broken and the Jazz finally win a game when I pick them to win.
76ers vs. Clippers:
The 76ers will be playing the Lakers tonight with a chance to capture their sixth straight road win. The run the 76ers have been on has been very impressive, considering that a few of those wins were without Joel Embiid playing. The Clippers have recently been a little inconsistent, and even pulled all their starters to spark a comeback win over the Atlanta Hawks a few days ago. I expect the 76ers to keep their road win streak going by beating the Clippers.
Suns vs. Hornets:
The Hornets are one of the most interesting teams in the league. Before this season, I would have classified them a “possible fringe contender for a playoff spot,” but after 40+ games, the Hornets are fourth in the East, ahead of teams like the Heat and Celtics. On the other hand, I would have labeled the Suns in the same way before the season (although making the playoffs in the West is a challenge because the West is so much better than the East). But Phoenix has been even more impressive, holding second place in the West, placing them above everyone in the standings other than the Utah Jazz. In this game, I like the Suns to win, especially after Lamelo Ball’s injury.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
March 19, 2021 - March 21, 2021
College Basketball:
Florida (7) vs. Virginia Tech (10):
I think Florida was a little overvalued seeded as a seven seed. On the other hand, Virginia Tech lost two games after returning from COVID-19 pauses this season, and I think overall with just six losses this year (and two of those being right after a pause), this team is a lot more talented on paper than their record or seeding indicates. I think this game has the feel of an 8-9 game in the tournament, and is a complete toss-up game. One of the lesser-known factors of this game is coaching. Mike Young led Wofford to the Round of 32 as a seven seed where they lost a close game to Kentucky. He is now Virginia Tech’s head coach. I think the all-around game of Keve Aluma will lead Virginia Tech to a Round of 64 upset.
UConn (7) vs. Maryland (10):
UConn has played very well all season when James Bouknight has been healthy and in the lineup. He is healthy heading into the tournament and the last time the Huskies were in the tournament as a seven seed, they won the national championship behind the guard play of a future first round pick, Shabazz Napier. Could James Bouknight do his own Napier impression, or even a Kemba Walker impression to get the Huskies to the championship again? Maybe not, but only time will tell. However, the first thing he will have to do is get past Maryland, who has the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Darryl Morsell. Morsell will most likely draw the assignment of guarding Bouknight, and I think it will be a relatively even matchup. The game will come down to the pieces around Bouknight, and Maryland’s offensive production, and I think UConn gets enough offense from other scorers to win this game.
North Carolina (8) vs. Wisconsin (9):
This will be a great matchup, and it is almost impossible to pick a team definitively to win this game. My gut tells me that Wisconsin will win, but my brain is saying North Carolina. In my subjective bracket, I have Wisconsin winning this game, but in my objective bracket I have North Carolina winning. So if I have to give my official prediction and my explanation for it, I am picking North Carolina. Why? Because Wisconsin has trouble dealing with versatile big men who dominate the glass, and North Carolina’s Armando Bacot, Garrison Brooks, and Day’Ron Sharpe combine for 22.6 rebounds per game. Oh, and not to mention, they also combine for 32.1 points per game. That’s a lot to handle for a Wisconsin team that has really struggled to guard big men like Kofi Cockburn, Luka Garza, and Hunter Dickinson all year long. I expect North Carolina to dominate the glass and win the game.
Loyola Chicago (8) vs. Georgia Tech (9):
Loyola Chicago and Georgia Tech play through the post a lot, and the argument can be made that the starting centers for both teams are the teams’ best players. Georgia Tech plays great team defense, led by Jose Alvarado, who averages 3.0 steals per game. This prediction changed during the day for me. Originally I had Georgia Tech winning this game, but with the reports that ACC Player of the Year, Moses Wright, won’t be playing (Georgia Tech’s leading scorer and rebounder), that prediction has changed. I think Cameron Krutwig and Loyola Chicago will win this game because of a lack of defensive experience without Georgia Tech’s rim protector.
NBA:
Mavericks vs. Trail Blazers:
These teams have been playing up to their expectations recently, and the Mavericks have really been rounding into form. Both the Mavericks and Blazers have picked up a few key wins recently, and the stars of both teams, Luka Doncic and Damian Lillard, have been playing as MVP-caliber players recently. I think the Mavericks will come away with a win over the Trail Blazers, although this will be a very close game.
Warriors vs. Grizzlies:
Two of the most exciting, highlight-making guards in the league, Ja Morant and Stephen Curry, will go head-to-head in this game. Both these teams desperately need wins against teams in the West if they want to make the playoffs. This matchup could be a preview of the 8 vs. 9 seed play-in game in the Western Conference Playoffs. Regardless of what it means for the future, I think the Warriors will play well enough to be able to beat the Grizzlies in this matchup.
76ers vs. Knicks:
The Knicks are an under-the-radar team, especially on the defensive end. Tom Thibodeau really has the Knicks playing good defense, and it looks like the Knicks finally found a good draft class and the right player to lead them. Julius Randle has played great all season long to get this team to where it currently is. However, these teams played earlier this week, and the 76ers won 99-96. After a rough loss to the Bucks, I expect the 76ers to rebound from that loss by picking up another victory over the Knicks.
Lakers vs. Suns:
It seems like the Lakers have been playing better to start the second half of the season. They seem to have really found a great flow on offense, and they are finally knocking down all of the open looks from deep that they get from the attention Lebron draws. The Suns have been great all season and I think now everyone knows they are a serious contender to challenge for high playoff seeding in the West. I think the Lakers are well aware of that, however, and they will walk away with the win.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
March 12, 2021 - March 14, 2021
NBA:
76ers vs. Wizards:
The Wizards seem to always find a way to beat teams that are much better than they are, so this game could go either way. Other than their tendency to beat really good teams, the Wizards do not have much going for them unfortunately. While their offense is good and Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook are hard to guard, their defense is not very good. On the other side of the court, the 76ers have everything going for them. They are the leaders in the Eastern Conference Standings, and they have the favorite for MVP, Joel Embiid. The 76ers are too good to pick against, so I will pick them to beat the Wizards.
Pacers vs. Lakers:
The Pacers had a chance over the All-Star Break to pick up some hardware and also reset the outlook of their season. While Cassius Stanley did not win the Dunk Contest, Domantas Sabonis did win the Slam Dunk Contest. But individual awards are not what the Pacers want. They want to make sure that they get some team awards, or at least that they make the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Lakers got some much-needed rest over the All Star Break and I think Lebron James and Co. will be too much for the Pacers to handle. I’ll pick the Lakers to win this matchup.
Mavericks vs. Nuggets:
These two teams will be in need of wins against good teams for all of the second half of the season, as they both hope to improve their playoff seeding. Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic will both try to lead their teams to those high playoff seeds, while also competing for the NBA MVP award. In terms of this game, I think both teams have strengths in different areas of the court, but the point guards and centers will decide this game. I think that Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic will both play very well to lead the Nuggets to a victory over the Mavericks.
Jazz vs. Warriors:
The Jazz had a great first half of the season, and it looks like they might end the season with the best record in the league. While I do not want to call anything too early, if the Jazz are able to maintain the level of play they were at in the first half of the season, the best record in the league will be theirs to lose. The Warriors, on the other hand, are just trying to make sure they make the playoffs. I think that as long as Stephen Curry stays healthy, this team will be able to make the playoffs. But none of that matters in this game. All I know is that I am 0-2 picking the Jazz to win games, but I’m going to reinforce my commitment to believing in this team. The Jazz will win this game.

PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
March 5, 2021 - March 7, 2021
College Basketball (regular season games):
Indiana vs. #23 Purdue:
Indiana has a lot on the line in this huge rivalry game against Purdue. Not only is their pride on the line, due to the nature of this in-state rivalry, but also the Hoosiers need a few more wins to propel themselves into the NCAA Tournament. Currently, the Hoosiers are sitting on the wrong side of the bubble (they are in my Next Four Out), but a win over Purdue, who is currently sitting as a projected four seed in the tournament and is a top 25 team, would be a significant resume boost. A losing record will not be enough to make the NCAA Tournament, so Indiana’s 12-13 record needs to get better. If the Hoosiers could get this win, and another one or two wins in the Big Ten Tournament, they have a chance of making it. On the other side, if Purdue secured this victory, it might be enough to ensure the Boilermakers getting a four seed. I think that Purdue has to slow down at some point though, and I think Indiana will slow them down and win this game because they simply have too much on the line.
#17 Oklahoma State vs. #6 West Virginia:
Oklahoma State seemingly has the consensus first overall pick in next year’s NBA Draft, Cade Cunningham. After Cunningham scored 40 points against Oklahoma in an overtime win, Oklahoma State has now lost two games in a row. But West Virginia has looked great all season, and it seems like every loss they have suffered this season was an overtime loss, including their last loss to Baylor earlier this week. I think West Virginia is too good for Oklahoma State to beat, especially when West Virginia has the opportunity to bounce back after a loss. This will be a very close matchup between two really good teams, but I think in the end, West Virginia will pull out the victory.
#4 Illinois vs. #7 Ohio State:
Ohio State needs this win to help their seeding for the Big Ten Tournament. A four seed in the Big Ten Tournament gets a double-bye, but currently the Buckeyes are sitting at fifth place, with a 12-7 record in conference, behind Iowa and Purdue, who have 12-6 records. They would need a loss by one of those two teams and a win in this game against Illinois to get that four seed. But I don’t see it happening. Illinois has been playing with a lot of effort while Ayo Donsunmu has been out with a broken nose. If Dosunmu can come back for this game, I think Illinois will be able to exact their revenge on Ohio State comfortably. But even if Donsunmu cannot play, I still think Illinois is playing well enough to beat Ohio State, and Illinois will win on Saturday.
#25 Wisconsin vs. #5 Iowa:
Wisconsin has not been playing well recently, and they have lost their last six games against ranked teams. They are currently on a two-game losing streak and are 4-6 in their last ten games overall. They really need to figure out how to stop opposing teams’ centers, but unfortunately a game against Luka Garza, the presumptive National Player of the Year winner this year, will not help them figure out a new strategy. Garza is too good to try to test new strategies against. Iowa, as I just mentioned in my preview of the Ohio State-Illinois matchup, would guarantee a top four seed in the Big Ten Tournament with a win against Wisconsin. I think that Luka Garza will be too much for Wisconsin to handle, and Iowa will win this game.

PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
February 26, 2021 - February 28, 2021
NBA:
Pacers vs. Celtics:
The Celtics are on a losing streak, and have now fallen below the .500 mark on the year, but after their loss to the Hawks, I think that this team will rebound from the loss to play better against the Pacers. I think these two teams are currently an even matchup for each other. The Pacers are 15-15, and the Celtics are 15-17. From their record, you can tell that these two teams are struggling and vastly underperforming expectations. The Domantas Sabonis will definitely be motivated after missing out on an All-Star game appearance to play even harder than he has been in the next few games. However, I think the motivation of the whole Celtics team will be too much for the Pacers to handle, and I think the Celtics will win this game.
Jazz vs. Heat:
This will be a very entertaining matchup. Donovan Mitchell against Jimmy Butler. Rudy Gobert against Bam Adebayo, with other position-based comparisons extending even further down these rosters. I think this will be a close game because with Jimmy Butler in the lineup, the Heat have stayed close in all of their games, even when they lose. The Heat have played themselves into the eight seed in the East after a very slow start to the season. The Heat are on a five-game win streak but 22-2 in a span of 24 games is too good to pick against. That is the Jazz’s current run, and I think that run will continue with a Utah win over the Heat.
Mavericks vs. Nets:
The Mavericks have finally dug out of their slump and they are 7-3 in their last ten games. The Mavericks are making this matchup look interesting on paper, especially because we still do not know the availability of Kevin Durant for this game. Regardless of his availability, the Nets have beaten many great teams without him. On their seven-game win streak, the Nets have beaten three of the top four seeds in the Western Conference standings, without Kevin Durant playing in any of those games, and even with Kyrie Irving missing some time too. Throughout the season, the Nets have beaten a lot of teams above .500 and I think that will continue. I am picking the Nets to win this game.
Clippers vs. Bucks:
The Clippers have been playing very well recently, but have lost a few games, including a game against the Nets. In that game, Paul George was removed from the game for the final three minutes because of his post-injury minutes restriction. If the Clippers can jump out to an early lead in this game, hopefully they won’t need to worry about minutes restrictions to decide the game. While I do not think the Clippers will jump out to a huge lead against the Bucks, I do think the Clippers are good enough to win this game. I think the Clippers will play up to their expectations and will beat the Bucks.
College Basketball:
#14 Texas vs. #18 Texas Tech:
Texas Tech is a very talented team, but recently they have been losing a lot of close games. While it is not a worrying trend long-term, I do think it is important for their short-term outcomes. Texas captured an important victory over Kansas on Tuesday after squandering a 19-point lead over West Virginia to eventually lose the game. Courtney Ramey in Andrew Jones had a bit of a disagreement on the bench during that game against West Virginia, and their rebound win in overtime over Kansas might have sent their season in an entirely different direction. I think Texas has a lot of refocused energy now, and Texas will beat Texas Tech in a feisty in-state battle.
#5 Illinois vs. #23 Wisconsin:
This matchup has rapidly become more interesting throughout the past few weeks. Illinois has been soaring in the AP polls, while Wisconsin has steadily dropped after losing many games to ranked teams in the Big Ten. Illinois’ loss to Michigan State was very shocking, and importantly, Ayo Donsunmu, a National Player of the Year candidate, broke his nose in the game, and will not play against Wisconsin. Wisconsin, however, is still not guaranteed to win this game. Nate Reuvers and Micah Potter combined for zero rebounds against Michigan, and I think Wisconsin’s rebounding issues will plague them in this game. Even without Ayo Donsunmu, I think Kofi Cockburn’s rebounding ability and overall physicality in the post will allow Illinois to scrap out a win over Wisconsin.
#2 Baylor vs. #17 Kansas:
Baylor nearly lost to Iowa State on Tuesday. That would have been the biggest upset of the year easily, and might have been one of the biggest upsets of the last decade in college basketball. Kansas barely lost an overtime battle against Texas on the road on Tuesday. While both teams were in very close games, I think the experiences benefit Kansas more. Kansas will return to Allen Fieldhouse, where they will have fans to influence the game.I have said many times in the past that I would not pick against Baylor unless it was against Gonzaga, but I take it back. Because this is only a week or so after a COVID-19 pause for Baylor, I think Kansas will get the ultimate win of the year with an upset of Baylor at home.
#9 Iowa vs. #4 Ohio State:
Ohio State will have to play two challenging games this week. Michigan State has been playing better recently, especially during their massive upset over Illinois, and they will fight hard to try to beat Ohio State too. Ohio State has not played a game since their loss to Michigan, so I think they will be playing with a lot of motivation. On the other hand, if Iowa loses a close game to Michigan tonight, I think the Hawkeyes will have extra motivation to beat Ohio State, and if they win, they will be on a big win streak. I believe they will also have enough motivation from their close loss to Ohio State in early February at home. Because of the extra motivation for the Hawkeyes in this game, I think Iowa will win.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
February 19, 2021 - February 21, 2021
NBA:
Jazz vs. Clippers:
The Clippers are facing injury issues, after having Kawhi Leonard and Paul George sit out on Wednesday against the Jazz. To me, I do not think the injuries affect the outcome of this matchup. The Jazz are facing another big test in this game, but they have beaten everyone thrown at them during their most recent win streak. They beat five of last year’s top six teams in the East: The Pacers, Celtics, Bucks, Heat, and 76ers in a row before beating the Clippers by 18 points. Wow. There are no words to describe how good the Jazz have been this year. I think the Jazz are cementing themselves as serious contenders, and as such, I think the Jazz will beat the Clippers.
Heat vs. Lakers:
The Heat and Lakers are finally playing each other, in the rematch of last year’s NBA Finals. The Heat had to deal with a depleted roster for most of the beginning of the season, but now they are looking slightly better since Jimmy Butler returned from his injury. Speaking of injuries, the Lakers will be playing without Anthony Davis. Not having AD will definitely have an impact on this game, but the Lakers still have last year’s Finals MVP, Lebron James. Lebron is most likely on his way to winning the regular season MVP. While the loss of AD cannot be ignored, I still think Lebron and the Lakers are good enough to beat the Heat.
Suns vs. Grizzlies:
Last year, during the bubble, it looked like the Suns had enough pieces to become a playoff team if they took a tiny step forward this year. Well, the acquisition of Chris Paul was much more than just a tiny step, and now the Suns are possibly a contender to make the Western Conference Finals. The Grizzlies were in the playoff picture throughout the year last year, but this year, they have taken a tiny step back and now fall just outside of the top eight in the West. The COVID-19 protocols have most likely taken a toll on this very young team. In terms of this game, the Suns are playing too well for me to pick against them.
76ers vs. Raptors:
The 76ers have taken control of the Eastern Conference standings for now, while the Raptors have struggled at the beginning of the season. I think the Raptors might be struggling because of their lack of an actual homecourt. For the Toronto Raptors to play in Tampa Bay, it must feel odd for long-time members of the team, like Kyle Lowry. The Raptors have generally looked uncomfortable, while the 76ers have looked great under new head coach, Doc Rivers. The 76ers should definitely win this game, although it may be closer than people think it will be.
College Basketball:
Utah State vs. Boise State:
Boise State and Utah State played each other yesterday, resulting in a 79-70 win for Boise State. This matchup will go a long way towards deciding the regular season conference champion of the Mountain West. The Mountain West also has four teams in contention for an NCAA tournament bid, and both Boise State and Utah State are in that conversation. Utah State shot 46% from the floor in Wednesday’s matchup, but only 19% from three-point range, while Boise State shot 44% from the floor and 35% from beyond the arc. Regardless of the percentages, I think Boise State will beat Utah State to complete the regular season series sweep.
#15 Texas Tech vs. #23 Kansas:
Kansas is in an off-year, but I still believe Kansas is a great team. Texas Tech has been hovering around the same spot in the rankings that they were ranked at before the season started. Kansas played West Virginia tough and then avenged a January loss by beating Oklahoma State earlier this month, indicating that the Jayhawks have been playing better recently. I believe Kansas has been playing better recently, and this matchup is a favorable one for their team. Marcus Garrett won the defensive player of the year last year, and in the first matchup between Texas Tech and Kansas this season, Texas Tech star Mac McClung scored 21 points, but shot 5-16 from the floor. I believe Kansas will beat Texas Tech again, with their defense playing a key role in their victory.
#13 West Virginia vs. #12 Texas:
Texas and West Virginia played earlier this season, where Texas won on an Andrew Jones buzzer beater. West Virginia played very well in that game, even though it took place less than two weeks after Oscar Tshiebwe left the program. West Virginia lost to Oklahoma last Saturday in a double overtime game. I believe Bob Huggins will have his West Virginia team playing with an incredibly high level of intensity throughout the game, and if the game is nail-biter, like the loss to Oklahoma, they will correct the mistakes they made last week toward the end of the game. I think West Virginia will win this game, but I would not be surprised if it took an overtime or two to get to the end.
#3 Michigan vs. #4 Ohio State:
What a game this will be. A classic rivalry. Two top-five teams. Big Ten Basketball. This game could be the highest-ranked game of the season, although #1 Gonzaga and #2 Baylor still have not officially cancelled their game that was postponed on Dec. 5. Both teams play games today, so there won’t be any rest advantages for either of the teams. With neither team coming off a COVID-19 pause (although Michigan will have only played two games since their COVID-19 pause before the matchup on Sunday), I think the smarter, better team will win. Ohio State’s magic number on offense to win games this season has been 80. Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, Michigan has not given up 80 points since the first game of the season. Sorry, OSU fans (well, I’m not really sorry actually), but Sunday will be a victory for Michigan, who will also win the Big Ten regular season title.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
February 12, 2021 - February 15, 2021
NBA:
Bucks vs. Jazz:
If I told you before the season that this was a matchup between the best and fifth-best records in the NBA, you would assume that the Jazz were living up to their expectations (and maybe overperforming a little), and the Bucks were continuing their stride as a championship contender. But if I told you it was in fact the JAZZ with the best record in the NBA, you probably would have called me crazy. But that is the reality. The Utah Jazz, at 20-5, have the best record in the NBA. And in my estimation, they truly deserve this record. This team has been playing at an incredibly high level all year, while the Bucks have been underperforming. Because of their sustained level of play, I am picking the Jazz to win this game.
76ers vs. Suns:
Joel Embiid has been playing himself into MVP consideration, while the Suns have quietly seized a top-four seed in the West at the moment. We all saw the potential of the Suns to ascend in the standings, but I would be stunned to find someone who had them in the top four of the West. But enough about the Suns and Joel Embiid. The 76ers as a team deserve high praise and recognition. The focus of the basketball world before the year was on the Nets and Bucks, with their superstars, but Joel Embiid is playing at a superstar level too. The 76ers’ size will be too much for the Suns to guard, and as a result, this will be another win for the 76ers.
Nets vs. Warriors:
The Nets have not been able to beat teams who they should easily beat, but have beaten all the teams on their level, including the Warriors in the first game of the season. We thought that game might have been a tone-setter for both the Warriors and Nets, but right now, the Nets do not look like they are in a different class of the NBA than the one the Warriors are in. The Nets currently sit at 15-12, while the Warriors are at 13-12. While I do not think the gap between these teams is so large anymore, I think this will be another game where the Nets go on stage under the spotlight and beat another quality team.
Lakers vs. Nuggets:
Be prepared. This game will be highlighted by the battle between Lebron James and Nikola Jokic battling it out to make their respective cases for MVP. I think both of them will get triple-doubles, probably with 30+ points too. It will surely be a fun game to sit back and watch with those two superstars going head-to-head, and don’t forget, Jamal Murray and Anthony Davis are among the best “sidekicks” in the NBA. The rematch of last year’s Western Conference Finals has already been played once, with the Lakers taking a 114-93 victory. I think the Lakers are clearly better than the Nuggets as a team, and as a result, I think Lebron will show up in the big game like he always does. The Lakers will win this game.
College Basketball:
#22 Loyola Chicago vs Drake (2/13):
Drake put themselves on the map this year by starting the season off 18-0, but Loyola Chicago has been a known entity to college basketball fans after their Cinderella run as an 11-seed making it all the way to the Final Four before losing to Michigan. Overall, these two teams bring some very recent, short-term success to the table, and will play a back-to-back that will likely decide the Missouri Valley Conference regular season champion. While I do not know if they can complete the sweep of Drake, Loyola Chicago, one of the most underappreciated teams, will win the first game of their back-to-back with Drake.
#12 Oklahoma vs. #14 West Virginia:
Oklahoma was the talk of the nation after rattling off three straight wins over top ten teams. Then they played an ugly game, scoring only 52 points in a loss to #13 Texas Tech. They have only played one game since that loss, a win last Saturday against Iowa State. They also beat West Virginia 75-71 on January 2nd. On the other side, West Virginia must have taken their loss in the Big12-SEC Challenge to Florida personally. Since that loss, the Mountaineers are on a three-game win streak, including a win sending #23 Kansas out of the top 25 and a win over #7 Texas Tech. Miles Mcbride and Derek Culver are looking like First Team All-Big 12 players down the stretch. I already talked about the Mountaineers taking a loss personally. I think West Virginia will avenge their loss to Oklahoma from January with a solid win on Saturday.
#5 Villanova vs. #19 Creighton:
I thought that Creighton had the chance to take down Villanova and win the Big East this year. They have really underperformed so far, especially recently. Villanova is coming off a recent loss to St. John’s, and although they have won two games since that loss, I think a team on a smaller win streak is more likely to win games. Villanova seems to have reignited a fire within their team after their loss to St. John’s. I think that this rekindled Villanova team will not have any trouble beating a Creighton team that is stumbling through the season. While Villanova will win this game, I think it will be a good, close game mostly, but Villanova will blow it open towards the end.
#9 Virginia vs. #17 Florida State:
Technically this game is not on the weekend, but it is a holiday on Monday, so I’m going to go ahead and include it anyways. This game will most likely be a deciding factor in who wins the ACC regular season title. Both these teams play home games that they should win on Saturday before playing this matchup on Monday, so there is no advantage for either team when it comes to rest. Because there are no significant outside factors affecting this game, I will pick off my intuition and some stats. Virginia under Tony Bennett finds the big wins they need. They are still (technically) the reigning national champions, and while Florida State won the ACC regular season title last year, I think Virginia will win this game, and the ACC regular season title, though this will be a very entertaining game.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
February 5, 2021 - February 7, 2021
NBA:
Celtics vs. Clippers:
Kemba Walker is still treating his knee injury, and along with missing some games while resting, he has not yet looked his best when he plays. He has not yet scored more than 21 points in a game this season so far, even though he has taken 15 or more shots in four of his seven games. While the Celtics are 4-6 in their last 10 games, the Clippers are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Their only losses are to the Nets and the Hawks in the last 13 games, in fact (they went 11-2 in that extended stretch). Because of their sustained success, and overall depth of their roster, I think the Clippers will win this game.
Nets vs. 76ers:
This matchup is seeing some speculation as a possible Eastern Conference Finals matchup in the postseason. But right now, it is not important what the future holds, as I am only talking about this game. The Nets have failed to hold any of their last four opponents under 120 points, even while playing against the 12th place team in the West (the Oklahoma City Thunder), and the 14th place team in the East (the Washington Wizards). The 76ers, meanwhile, are 11-0 when playing with their favorite starting lineup. Ben Simmons is out tonight (2/4) with calf tightness, but I think he will be back for this showdown with the Nets, and will help lead the 76ers to a win.
Spurs vs. Rockets:
The in-state rivalry between the Spurs and Rockets has seen many phases and eras dominated by different players, and we are now entering into a new era of this rivalry. James Harden is no longer with the Rockets, and the Spurs have seen their most important players from their dynasty retire and even hold positions on the coaching staff in the case of Tim Duncan. Regardless, both these new look teams have looked decent, especially recently. While neither are serious title contenders, both these teams could make the playoffs and advance a round. I think the Rockets will win this game and they will continue their recent hot streak, which already includes winning six of their last seven games.
Jazz vs. Pacers:
The Pacers are still playing without Caris Levert and T.J. Warren and although this team is shorthanded, their play recently does not indicate they are. Because of the talent on the Pacers’ roster, I circled this game as a possible game where the Jazz’s win streak could possibly come to an end, because as soon as a win streak enters the double-digit range, it starts to become more likely that the win streak will end. However, since the Nuggets ended the Jazz’s win streak at 11 games, I think the Jazz will win this game.
College Basketball:
#10 Alabama vs. #18 Missouri:
I have been very vocal about this Alabama team all year long, and I truly think that Tennessee is the only team in the SEC on Alabama’s level. While the rankings would suggest that Missouri is close to Alabama, I do not think it is as close as it appears. Missouri’s identity is turning good defense into offense. Alabama’s identity is three-point shooting. So what’s the problem for Missouri? Well, Alabama is better than Missouri at Missouri’s own game. Alabama is ranked 3rd in adjusted defensive efficiency, while Missouri is ranked 44th. And to put the cherry on top, Alabama is 9th in three-pointers made per game, while Missouri is tied for 254th. I think Alabama will hit threes in bunches and play good defense to discard Missouri.
#23 Kansas vs. #17 West Virginia:
Kansas and West Virginia are two very evenly-matched teams. The first matchup this season between these two teams would not indicate that, as Kansas beat West Virginia 79-65 in that game. But there is a huge difference between then and now. West Virginia has changed their entire offensive scheme after losing Oscar Tshiebwe. They went from what was a three guard and two center lineup, which left no space for guards to operate in the paint, to a system with four perimeter players (guards and forwards) and just one center to run the pick & roll through. Since that change, West Virginia has looked a lot better on offense, and I think this style is one that Kansas will have trouble defending. I think West Virginia will win this game.
#19 Wisconsin vs. #12 Illinois:
In week two of this season, this matchup would have been an AP top-5 game, but #4 Michigan and #7 Ohio State have beaten either of these teams or both of them already, and have distanced themselves from Wisconsin and Illinois. However, these are still two quality teams, and they could both make a deep NCAA Tournament run in March. In the Big Ten standings, there is only a half game difference between second place Illinois and fifth place Wisconsin, so this game will go a long way towards deciding the seeding of the Big Ten Tournament, and possibly the winner of the regular season. While I think Wisconsin is a very strong team overall, I think that Illinois is playing at a much higher level currently than Wisconsin is, and I am picking Illinois to win this game.
North Carolina vs. Duke:
Normally at this time of the year, this would be a matchup between two teams ranked in the top 15 nationally with plenty of hype surrounding the biggest rivalry in college basketball. But this year has been an off-year for almost all of the ‘blue bloods’ of college basketball, and neither North Carolina nor Duke are exceptions to this rule. Perhaps North Carolina’s preseason ranking outside of the top 15 this year makes the position they are currently in less surprising, but Duke started the season with a top ten ranking, and the Blue Devils are now 7-6 on the season and in serious danger of missing the NCAA Tournament (they are not even on my bubble watch in my most recent bracket). Duke needs to make a statement about who they are in this game against their arch rivals, but I do not think they will. I think North Carolina is the better team overall, and they will win this game.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
January 29, 2021 - January 31, 2021
NBA:
Mavericks vs. Jazz:
The Dallas Mavericks are on a three game win streak. The Utah Jazz are on a ten game win streak. Luka Doncic is struggling to keep the Mavericks afloat, but at least he is in contention for league MVP. The Mavericks are currently sitting in 11th in the West, and while it might not seem that important this early in the season, with how loaded the West is, some of the close games a team loses over the course of a season might come back to bite them. After beating Dallas on Wednesday, I expect the Jazz to win this game, and sweep Dallas in the back-to-back.
Lakers vs. Celtics:
Lakers-Celtics is one of the all-time most classic rivalries, and is definitely the biggest rivalry in the NBA, even though these teams play in different conferences. The last time these teams played in the NBA Finals seems like a century ago with all the player changes on both these rosters, but every game they play in the regular season has a higher intensity to it than other games do. The Lakers will be dealing with some injury issues, and if Anthony Davis is out, then the result of this game will be drastically affected. However, assuming AD is healthy, I am picking the Lakers to win this game.
Grizzlies vs. Spurs:
These teams are neck and neck at the bottom of the Western Conference playoff picture. Perhaps both teams are overachieving considering very talented teams like the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks are behind them in the standings. I think that the Spurs are better suited to make the playoffs under the coaching influence of Gregg Popovich and with veteran presences like Demar Derozan and Lamarcus Aldridge as stars, though the Grizzlies young core is very exciting in its own right. That young core on a game-by-game basis might be more talented than the Spurs’ core and as a result, I am picking the Grizzlies to win this game.
76ers vs. Pacers:
Behind the stellar play of Domantas Sabonis and Malcolm Brogdon, the Pacers are still in third place in the East, even without their acquisition from the James Harden trade, Caris Levert, available to play. Their recent play has been one of the biggest surprises of the season for me so far. But the 76ers are the kings of the East right now, and excluding the games where Joel Embiid has been injured, this team has looked nearly unstoppable by other Eastern Conference teams. As a result of that lasting dominance, I will take the 76ers to win this game.
College Basketball:
#7 Iowa vs. #19 Illinois:
These teams were supposed to be the class of the Big Ten heading into the season, and while they might not be number one and number two in the conference standings, they are both in the top four. Illinois walks into this game as a betting favorite, after the Fighting Illini ended their two game losing streak with a win over Penn State. Iowa, on the other hand, has not played for over a week since their loss to Indiana. In this clash of top-tier Big Ten teams, I am going to agree with Vegas, even though Iowa is the higher ranked team. I believe that Kofi Cockburn matches up well enough with Luka Garza and Illinois’ perimeter shooting will be the deciding factor in an Illinois win.
#8 Virginia vs. #20 Virginia Tech:
Virginia has the overall edge in this rivalry, especially in terms of all-time results. According to Sports Reference.com, since the 1949-1950 season, Virginia is 63-44 against Virginia Tech. But putting program records aside, Virginia’s recent dominance has led to more success in this rivalry, including a 56-53 victory in the last meeting. I think Virginia this year has the more talented team once again, and Virginia Tech has been slumping recently as a team. With all of those factors considered, I think Virginia will win this game.
#21 Minnesota vs. Purdue:
Purdue was on a great run after winning four games in a row, including wins over two teams who were ranked in the top 25. But then they ran into a brick wall: #4 Michigan. Purdue lost by 17 points but it always looked like they were playing solid basketball throughout the game. Minnesota has been through all kinds of highs and lows this season, including beating that aforementioned Michigan team a few weeks back. After a loss to Maryland, I think Minnesota will not take Purdue lightly. But what Minnesota thinks of Purdue does not affect the end result of the game. I predict Purdue will get back on track with a win.
Michigan State vs. #13 Ohio State:
Michigan State came off a 20-day layoff and really looked awful against Rutgers. The Spartans had 21 turnovers and only 16 made field goals. It’s not a formula for success when you have more turnovers than shots made, and unfortunately the turnover stats and poor shooting are not anomalies for this Michigan State team. The only way Michigan State can win this game is if they force errors from Ohio State, but I don’t see that happening. Ohio State will exploit Michigan State’s turnover issues and will win the game.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
January 22, 2021 - January 24, 2021
NBA:
Nuggets vs. Suns (Friday):
The Denver Nuggets have shown a lot of promise in their recent games, and Nikola Jokic has been sustaining his MVP-like numbers. On the other hand, the Phoenix Suns have been consistent throughout the season. This game will be a very close game, and it could be a preview of a first round Western Conference playoff matchup. I do not know how accurate these teams’ starts will be to their final standings, but for right now, I think the Suns are currently playing better as a team and they will win this game.
Warriors vs. Jazz:
The Golden State Warriors have been the comeback kings when playing on the road this season, and I expect this game to be no different. The Utah Jazz will get out to a big lead, and after everyone has turned off their TVs, that’s when the Warriors will make it close. But the Jazz are built differently than the teams the Warriors have recently come back from behind against. The Jazz have a higher sense of urgency than a team like the L.A. Lakers because who they play in the playoffs really matters and I think they sense that. Therefore, the Jazz will get out to a big lead, but unlike the Lakers, the Jazz will keep their foot on the gas pedal, and they will win the game.
Heat vs. Nets:
The Miami Heat are on a two-game win streak after losing three games in a row (two to the Philadelphia 76ers, and one to the Detroit Pistons). Overall, the Heat have been a week team this season, especially considering how they ended last season. On the other hand, the Nets have drastically improved, even though at the time of this being written, their Big 3 is 0-1. I expect that to change though, and with two games under their belt, the Nets and their Big 3 will have enough synergy to beat a struggling Heat team.
Raptors vs. Pacers:
The Toronto Raptors were awful to start the season, while the Indiana Pacers had a pretty decent start. However, they have traded away two-time All-Star Victor Oladipo, and the big piece they got back in the trade, Caris Levert, has not been cleared to play yet after an MRI revealed a small mass on his kidney. The Pacers will also be playing without their starting Center, Myles Turner. The Raptors meanwhile, have won three of their last four games. Because of the Raptors’ recent play, I think they might have turned the corner on the season, and I think the Raptors will win this game.
College Basketball:
#23 UConn vs. #11 Creighton:
UConn lost their most recent game to St. Johns after leading for more than 35 minutes of the game. Creighton has lost two straight games to unranked opponents, including surrendering a 13-point lead against Butler, a team who is currently 4-7 on the season. Both teams are coming off very rough games. But there is a big difference between these teams’ losses. UConn is playing without their leading scorer and best all-around player James Bouknight, who scored 40 points in the matchup between these two teams earlier this season in a December loss for the Huskies. Without Bouknight, I think UConn will struggle to score reliably and full-strength Creighton will win this game.
Maryland vs. #17 Minnesota:
This might sound crazy if you have watched either of these teams play recently, but Minnesota’s tendencies do not point to them winning this game. While Maryland lost to #7 Michigan by 24 on Tuesday, and Minnesota beat Michigan by 18 last Saturday, the external appearance and surface-level stats favor Minnesota, but if you take a deeper look into these two teams, Minnesota fans should be worried. Over the course of this season, Minnesota is 1-2 in the game after beating ranked teams. Maryland is 2-1 in the game after losing to ranked teams. So, as crazy as it sounds, I think Maryland will bounce back by beating Minnesota on Saturday.
#20 Clemson vs. Florida State:
Clemson looked very underrated for a good portion of the season after picking up many wins over major conference teams at the beginning of the season. But then they got routed by Virginia, a team that was previously ranked 6 slots below Clemson. And this week, they allowed Georgia Tech to shoot 62% from three-point range. Right now, Clemson looks very overrated. Meanwhile, Florida State has flown under the radar and have now pulled off the upset that puts them back on the map. Florida State has been on a roll ever since they had three games postponed. The game before their hiatus was a loss at Clemson. Florida State has all the momentum and is seeking revenge on Clemson in this game, and I expect Florida State to win.
#15 Ohio State vs. #10 Wisconsin:
Wisconsin has been pretty solid throughout the year, with the exception of a few close losses, but their offense has gone through some rough patches at times. Does anyone else remember Michigan’s 43-6 run against Wisconsin? Well, I do. They scored just 6 points in a span of 16:18 of game time during that run by Michigan. The reason I bring this up is that Ohio State has held their opponent under 80 points in 13 out of their 15 games this year. Ohio State is averaging 63.8 points per game in their losses however. If Wisconsin avoids a major scoring drought, and holds Ohio State under the magic number of 80 points, they will win this game. So what’s the problem for Wisconsin? Well, Ohio State is 3-0 in the game after a loss this season, averaging 82.0 points per game in those games. I expect Ohio State to continue their trend of avoiding losing streaks, and if I had to put a score on it, I’d say look for something in the range of 77-72.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
January 15, 2021 - January 17, 2021
NBA:
Mavericks vs. Bucks:
Both the Dallas Mavericks and the Milwaukee Bucks had mediocre starts to the season, but these teams have rounded into form as of late. The Mavericks are on a four-game win streak, and got Kristaps Porzingis back from injury last game. The Bucks are on a three-game win streak, and this team is starting to look a lot better across the court. The Bucks are playing especially well when the players around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton are playing well, and I think the bench of the Bucks will impact this game just enough for the Bucks to beat the Mavericks.
Magic vs. Nets:
Going into this game the Orlando Magic are somehow higher in the Eastern Conference standings than the Brooklyn Nets are. That could be due to the recent absence of Kyrie Irving. But the Nets have acquired a new superstar, eight-time All-Star James Harden, via the Houston Rockets. This game could be James Harden’s debut in Brooklyn. If Harden does make his debut in this game, this game might have a team score 140 points due to a lack of synergy on defense for the Nets, but if Harden plays, I expect the Nets to find a way to beat the Magic.
Hawks vs. Trail Blazers:
The Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers were both expected to be in the playoff picture before the season started. The Hawks have stayed right about where most people had them before the season, at eighth in the Eastern Conference. The Trail Blazers have also played at their expected level, currently tied for third in the West with the Utah Jazz and Phoenix Suns. If these teams are going to maintain their relative status quo’s, then I expect Damian Lillard to outduel Trae Young, and the Trail Blazers will win this game.
Jazz vs. Nuggets:
These teams have not played each other since game seven of the first round of last year’s playoffs. In that matchup, the Denver Nuggets completed their comeback from a 3-1 series deficit, winning game seven 80-78. While the Utah Jazz have started the season strong so far, the Nuggets have had a shaky start. Despite that shaky start, I think that the Nuggets will win this game, and it could even be the start of a big win streak for this team.
NCAA Basketball:
#21 Ohio State vs. #14 Illinois:
Ohio State comes into this game on a two-game win streak after beating Northwestern and Rutgers, while Illinois lost a very close game to Maryland in their last outing. Ohio State has the advantage in momentum heading into this game. Illinois has the advantage in talent heading into this game. While this game should be close throughout, I expect talent to reign supreme, and I think Ayo Dosunmu and Illinois will get on a big run, and Illinois will win this game.
North Carolina vs. Florida State:
If this matchup took place a month earlier, on December 16 rather than January 16, it would have been a highly anticipated matchup between #15 Florida State, and #22 North Carolina. But instead, it will be played on January 16, with both teams now out of the top 25 entirely. Florida State did not play a game for more than two weeks until a 103-75 win over N.C. State on January 13, while North Carolina is on a quiet three-game win streak. Regardless of North Carolina’s win streak, I think they are the weaker team, and Florida State will win this game.
#2 Baylor vs. #15 Texas Tech:
Texas Tech comes into this game with a HUGE amount of momentum on their side after beating #4 Texas despite facing a 10-point halftime deficit, continuing their win streak, which is now at 3 games. But there’s a much bigger win streak on the other side of the court. #2 Baylor, who is 11-0 so far, awaits Texas Tech on Saturday. In terms of my prediction for this game, it’s easy for me. Right now, I would pick Baylor against any team in the country, except #1 Gonzaga. Baylor will win this game.
#18 Virginia vs. #12 Clemson:
Before the season started, this matchup was slated to be #4 Virginia against unranked Clemson. Oh, how the tables have turned. #12 Clemson now walks into this game as the higher ranked team, and as the highest ranked team in the ACC. #18 Virginia has won four games (all ACC conference games) in a row since getting demolished by #1 Gonzaga. I do not think the rankings tell the full story in this game, however. I am picking Virginia to pull off the upset on the road over Clemson.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
January 8, 2021 - January 10, 2021
NCAA Basketball:
Ohio State vs. Rutgers:
These two Big Ten teams previously met on December 23, 2020 where Ohio State won 80-68. They are both sitting in the middle of the Big Ten standings currently, and a big game like this could prove pivotal by the end of the season. Both teams are coming off losses in their last game, and in Rutgers’ case, the last two games. I expect Rutgers to get out to an early lead and win this game.
Texas v West Virginia:
Texas has a lot of recent hype around their squad after their blowout win over Kansas, who at the time was ranked third in the nation. West Virginia lost to that same Kansas team on December 22, 2020, and since then have lost starting Center Oscar Tshiebwe, who is entering the transfer portal. Expect Texas to carry their momentum into this game and beat this depleted West Virginia team.
Clemson v North Carolina:
Clemson was a team that entered the season with relatively low expectations, and probably wouldn’t have imagined that they would walk into this matchup with North Carolina as the higher ranked team. North Carolina has almost exclusively played in close games this season, against ranked and unranked teams alike. North Carolina will keep this game close, but Clemson will pull out the win.
Minnesota v Iowa:
Apparently Santa put Iowa on the naughty list this year, and that was shown by Minnesota handing Iowa a lump of coal on Christmas Day 2020 in Minneapolis when they beat Iowa 102-95. I expect Iowa to come out angry about their loss to Minnesota earlier in the season. Iowa will beat Minnesota, and it might get ugly in this cross-state rivalry.
NBA:
Jazz vs. Bucks:
These two teams had high expectations going into the season, but have had lackluster performances to start the season. However, heading into this game, the Bucks have won three games in a row, while the Jazz have lost two games in a row. I expect the Bucks to win this cross-conference matchup.
Nuggets vs. 76ers:
The 76ers are 7-2 to start the season, while the Nuggets are 3-4. Two teams who, just like the Jazz and Bucks, had very high expectations before the season. The 76ers are living up to these expectations, while the Nuggets are only slowly progressing to what they were supposed to be. Coming off their loss to the Nets, I expect the 76ers to get revenge by beating the Nuggets.
Suns vs. Pacers:
Two 6-2 teams who are overachieving by reaching the higher ranks of their conference standings so far meet in this cross-conference clash. The Pacers have lost the player who led last year’s Pacers squad in scoring, T.J. Warren, though. The Suns have a new look this year, and so far this look has been good. I think the Suns will continue their strong start to the season by winning this game.
Heat vs. Celtics:
The Heat and Celtics played each other just yesterday, but will play again on Sunday. The Celtics took that matchup by a score of 107-105 via a game-winning putback by Payton Pritchard. The last time a team beat the Heat and played them again in the same week, the Heat won the second matchup. I expect the Heat to do the same thing to the Celtics, and the Heat will walk away with the revenge win.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
January 1, 2021 - January 3, 2021
NFL:
Cowboys vs. Giants:
The Cowboys have been playing better as of late, especially on defense, and have won three games in a row. The Giants have lost three games in a row, and have scored 13 points or less in all three of those losses. The winner of this game will go to the playoffs as the NFC East Champion if the Washington Football Team loses to the Eagles. Expect the Cowboys to win this game and give themselves a chance to make the playoffs.
Cardinals vs. Rams:
The Rams have a starting quarterback who hasn't thrown a single pass in an NFL regular season game. The Cardinals might have an injured Kyler Murray, but they are still better off than the Rams, who are missing four starters. The Cardinals will win this one and clinch a playoff berth.
Packers vs. Bears:
The Packers still have the one-seed and a first-round bye to play for, while the Bears must win to make the playoffs. I think the Packers have just the right amount of motivation for them to beat a team that they destroyed in their first matchup this season, and they will win this game.
Washington vs. Eagles:
If the Washington Football Team win this game, they will win the NFC East, and will make the playoffs. The Eagles do not have a playoff spot to play for, but Jalen Hurts will be playing hard to gain the trust of the franchise. I think Washington's front seven will disrupt Jalen Hurts' play and the Washington Football Team will win this game and the NFC East.
NCAA Basketball:
#5 Houston vs. SMU:
#5 Houston is coming off their first loss of the year, while SMU remains undefeated and an underrated team. I think after losing their first game of the season, Houston has extra motivation to defeat SMU in this one, and they will.
#20 Duke vs. #18 Florida State:
#18 Florida State has lost two out of their last three games, but #20 Duke has not played a game since December 16. Florida State will be out to prove something after losing to UCF, and to Clemson in their first in-conference matchup. But Duke has many doubters all across the college basketball landscape, and I think they will be well-prepared, and Duke will win this game.
#10 Iowa vs. #14 Rutgers:
#10 Iowa and #14 Rutgers are both in the same situation. They lost two games ago, but rebounded to win their most-recent game. Rutgers' Ron Harper Jr. and Iowa's Luka Garza are both averaging more than 23 points-per-game, and their respective teams can both score a lot of points. I expect Iowa to win this game in a high-scoring, close game.
#8 Texas vs. #3 Kansas:
In this top-10 matchup of Big 12 conference opponents, both teams are battle-tested early in the season. Texas has played two teams this season that were ranked in the top-25 at the time of the game (they are 1-1 in ranked games) while #3 Kansas has played five such teams this season (they are 4-1 in ranked games), including three top-10 teams. Kansas is the more talented team in this game and I think the Jayhawks will make enough plays to win this game.
NBA:
Jazz vs. Spurs:
The Jazz and Spurs have had mixed results to begin this season. The Spurs started out with two straight wins but have lost two in a row. The Jazz have alternated wins and losses to start the season. With both teams coming off losses and neither having any real momentum into this game, expect the Jazz to win because of having a better roster than the Spurs overall.
Trail Blazers vs. Warriors:
The Warriors struggled at the start of the season with two straight losses, but they concluded their road trip to the East Coast with two wins (albeit over much weaker competition). The Blazers are 2-2 to start the season after playing four of the top six seeds from last season's Western Conference playoffs. I expect CJ McCollum and Damian Lillard to dominate as the Blazers cruise to a win in this one.
Heat vs. Mavericks:
The Heat and Mavericks have both been inconsistent to start the season. Jimmy Butler is listed as probable to return from his injury for this game. The Mavericks are playing without Kristaps Porzingis, and they are struggling. I expect the Heat to defeat this Dallas team that can't seem to find a path to success at the moment.
Suns vs. Nuggets:
The Suns are on a blazing hot streak to start the season, winning four of their first five games while the Nuggets, who are 1-3 so far, look like they're still searching for gold on the court while trying to win some games. Cameron Johnson and Mikal Bridges have emerged as productive scorers while Devin Booker, Chris Paul, and Deandre Ayton are excelling in scoring, passing, and rebounding, respectively. Meanwhile, The Nuggets so far have just been the Nikola Jokic show. With their more balanced roster, I expect the Suns to win this game.
PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND
December 24, 2020 - December 27, 2020
NFL:
Rams vs. Seahawks:
While this might seem surprising considering they just gave the Jets their first win of the year, the Rams have not yet lost twice in a row this season, and I think they can continue this streak. I am going to pick the Rams to win this one. This game will definitely be a close one, however, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Seahawks win this game.
Colts vs. Steelers:
This matchup features two teams trending in very different directions. The Colts have won three games in a row, albeit two of those games were against the Texans. The Steelers have lost three in a row after starting the season 11-0. The Colts need this win to have a chance at winning the AFC South, and I think the Colts will win this game as the Steelers continue their slump.
Eagles vs. Cowboys:
This rivalry does not seem to have as much relevance as it normally does around this time of the year, but somehow the Eagles at 4-9-1, and Cowboys at 5-9 still have a chance to make the playoffs by winning a weak NFC East division. The Eagles have been playing better recently in the two games Jalen Hurts has started, and for this reason, I expect the Eagles to pull out the win.
Titans vs. Packers:
The Titans and Packers have scored 436 and 434 points, respectively, over the course of the season, good enough for 1st and 3rd in the league in scoring. The Packers have won four games in a row, while the Titans have scored 41 points or more in three of their last four games. Expect the Packers to win in a very high-scoring game with a chance to clinch the one seed in the NFC.
NCAA Basketball:
#9 Wisconsin vs. #12 Michigan State
These powerhouse Big Ten basketball programs play each other on Christmas Day. Last year, they split the season series with each team winning on their home court. This year, expect Wisconsin to win this game (the only one against Michigan State this season) on the road, with a lack of fans playing a big role in this game.
Kentucky vs. Louisville
Kentucky against Louisville is one of the best rivalries in all of college basketball. This will be the first time these teams will meet in the regular season with neither of the teams ranked in 12 matchups. Kentucky is 1-5 for the first time since the 1926-1927 season, while Louisville is 5-1, though last Saturday they lost by 37 points to Wisconsin. Expect Louisville to avenge their overtime loss last season to Kentucky with a win at home.
#6 Houston vs. UCF
Houston is on a roll to start the season, starting out 6-0 with a win over #15 Texas Tech. UCF is quietly playing well to start this season too. They have beaten #21 Florida State on the road and their only loss is to #19 Michigan. While I think UCF is trending in the right direction, look for Houston to win this game convincingly.
#16 Virginia vs. #1 Gonzaga
Virginia has won three straight games since an upset loss to San Francisco. Gonzaga is 6-0 with wins over #3 Kansas, #4 Iowa, and #7 West Virginia. Both teams are playing well at the moment, but Gonzaga is a dynamic team. Expect Gonzaga to keep rolling in this game, utilizing their big-game experience and playmakers on offense.
NBA:
Nets vs. Celtics
The Brooklyn Nets destroyed the Golden State Warriors in the opening game of the NBA Season behind 20-point performances from Caris Levert, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving. The Celtics beat the Milwaukee Bucks behind 30-point performances by Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, including a game-winning three pointer by Tatum. I expect the Nets to win this game off the back of Kevin Durant and an advantage in bench points.
Mavericks vs. Lakers
Both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks lost their season openers in close games. Both Lebron James and Luka Doncic injured an ankle in those games. The Lakers won 3 out of 4 games against the Mavericks in their season series last year. I expect the Lakers to win a close Christmas-day game.
Rockets vs. Trail Blazers
The Houston Rockets’ James Harden’s availability for this game is in question, due to a four-day quarantine for violating NBA COVID-19 protocols, though he is expected to play. The Portland Trail Blazers’ Damian Lillard is coming off scoring just nine points in their season opener against the Utah Jazz. Expect Lillard and the Trail Blazers to rebound from their loss and get their first win of the season over the Rockets.
Magic vs. Wizards
Both the Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards defied expectations in their season openers. The Magic beat the reigning Eastern Conference Champions, the Miami Heat, while the Wizards led for most of the game against the Philadelphia 76ers. I expect Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal to have great games like they did in the season opener, and I expect the Wizards to win this game.
